Why Manufacturing
Why Manufacturing Why Manufacturing Why ManufacturingServices make up nearly two-thirds of the U.S. economy. Manufacturing accounts for only 12 percent. For many decades, economists looking at this disparity argued that manufacturing played a minor role in the modern economy, and that $1 billion generated by warehousing, transportation, and retailing produced the same economic benefits as $1 billion in production. They were wrong. Over the past decade, more and more economists have confirmed that manufacturing is indeed different from services. It is essential to innovation, and tightly linked to our nations economic health and national security.First, while manufacturing might be a small component of the U.S. economy, its output still came to $1.9 trillion in 2012, and by itself would have made the worlds tenth largest economy. The U.S. manufacturing sector was larger than the total economies of India, Canada, Mexico, or South Korea. The United States was the worlds leading producer o f manufactured goods from 1895 through 2009. Although some experts estimate that Chinese output surpassed that of the U.S. in 2012, the United States remains the worlds largest advanced technology producer. Manufactured goods constituted 86 percent of all U.S. exports in 2010.

The Role of a Casting Director and Skills Required
The Role of a Casting Director and Skills RequiredThe Role of a Casting Director and Skills RequiredIt may come as a surprise to learn exactly what a casting director is responsible for. Of course, they help gather a number of actor candidates for a given role in a film, television production or other theatrical production, but theres more. A casting director also reads the script and meets with the producer, director and sometimes the writer, to get an idea of the type of partie a given role calls for. Once this is determined, then the casting director gets to work. As a casting director, youll meet with any number of individuals and begin to narrow down the field in order to select the best candidates. Once a handful of hopefuls have been identified, your job is to present them to the director, producer, and often writer, of the project. Casting directors meet with thousands of actors over the course of a given year, not to mention a lifetime. They must determine whether an actor f its the look of a character as well as whether or not that particular actor would be believable in the role for which they will becast. Skills Required To become a casting director, you must first have the following skills Eye for Talent A good casting director can tell right off the bat whether or not a given actor has the chops for the role they are auditioning for. This is usually an innate skill but can be fine-tuned and developed over time. Good Memory You will see thousands upon thousands of actors over the lifetime of your career so a good casting director must have a way of remembering the ones that matter. Even if you pride yourself on having a good memory, err on theside of caution and keep a library of index cards (including photos) with a profile of all candidatesyouve met and worked with. Patience ?It often takes a lot of time to find exactly the right person for a role, so you must exercise patience and not let yourself be pressured into making the wrong decision o ut of haste. Your reputation is on the line with every actor you cast. The Importance of Casting in a Production While final casting decisions are ultimately madeby the client(i.e., producers, directors, and commercial clients), the focus offered to the production and choice of talent is guided by the professional casting director. Casting shapes the initial pre-production of just about any project. Ultimately, it is key to the success of any theatrical undertaking. Career Advice The best way to prepare for this position is to start learning as much as you can about available actors and actresses. Its crucial to know their names and faces so that you become a library of casting information. If you need to get your foot in the door, look for casting directors who might be looking to hire a casting associate or even a production assistant. This is an industry where people start at the bottom and work theirway up. This is also a highly competitive industry, so dont be shy about your career aspirations. Let everyone you work for know that your goal is to become a casting director.

The 3 most annoying coworker types and what to do about them
The 3 most annoying coworker types and what to do about themThe 3 most annoying coworker types and what to do about themOver the course of our careers, there are certain types of coworkers we run into over and over. They drive us crazy without even trying. Until we learn how to manage them, were hopelessly distracted by the daily frustration of their existence. Below are the three most common types of annoying coworkers, and what to do about them1) The DelegatorThese are the coworkers who assign their work to you even though you have the saatkorn job title. Delegators do everything they can to sit back, shirk and make you do more. In short, as one Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel employee put it, They know the system of letting others do the work.Delegation laziness isnt limited to managers. Even low-level employees can delegate the delegation, as one Petco employee phrased it. These delegators have mastered the art of appearing like theyre doing a lot without actually doing anything. It r eminds me of group projects in college where a couple standouts carry the load while others sit back and enjoy the benefits without doing the work, wrote an employee for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.Over time, one persons laziness can morph into a whole culture of nose-goes. An employee at Universal City Development Partners related that The last few years I was there, my coworkers got lazy and did elend want to help each other. They just played the game to stay employed. Before it gets to that point, you need to nip self-promoted delegators in the bud. But how? Some employees recommend not working hard, because the delegators will just give you more work if you do. Dont be the hard worker, said one employee at Tyson Foods. If you are they will work you the hardest. As one Boeing employee observed, Lazy guys get paid the same as the ones who get the plane built.Though being lazy might eventually force delegators to actually do some work, its not good for you long-term. At the end of the day - or, at least, at the end of a year and a career - the hard workers win. If youre struggling with a delegator, go to the actual delegators - your bosses, supervisors or managers - and ask them to clarify your job duties. Without blame, describe what work youve been doing for the delegator. Say that youre happy to do that if thats your highest and best use, but you want to make sure you have time for top-priority projects. Then, rather than talk back to your bossy coworker, let your real bosses handle it.2) The Too-Much-Team PlayerToo-much-team (TMT) players cant do anything by themselves. Raised on group projects and team sports, they know work in the context of work together. As one TMT player, who worked for United Activities Unlimited Inc., expressed, I feel that its essential for coworkers to work together for the common good of the company and those we are providing a service to. I am this type of coworker and my personality in the workplace is thermisch and infectiou s. Some people might thrive on this energy others are drained and irritated by it. Another TMT player at Coastal Womens Shelter complained, There was supposed to be teamwork, but in reality, there wasnt. You ended up doing it on your own.For introverts and people who work best alone, TMT players can be a nonstop nuisance. Everything was a group project, one employee at Vayneredia LLC complained. Some people enjoy that others feel that constant collaboration is inefficient. Ideally, wed all have a balance like Citibanks, at least as described by one employee Team projects were solely voluntary. If you wanted to do your share start to finish, that was okay. Would you rather split tasks inside a process with a coworker? Thats okay too.If youre surrounded by over-collaborator types, dont tell them that you work best alone companies, coworkers, and bosses want team players. Instead, work alone within your teams parameters. At the outset of the project, define clear expectations around ho w youll be contributing. Take full responsibility for that piece of it, and do it well on your own. This way, youll contribute meaningfully toward the teams mission while also getting to work solo. While your contributions are for team projects, one consultant summarized, mostly you work individually.3) The CompetitorBy contrast, competitors dont understand the true meaning of team. For them, childhood participation trophies were never enough. They were the athletes, the A-students and the class presidents of their youth. Now, they hate to feel that their old GPA and varsity letters dont matter. So they try to prove themselves by one-upping you.For example, an employee at Bill Bryan Chrysler Jeep Dodge described an extremely competitive backstabbing culture from coworkers. Likewise, an employee at BMO Harris Bank described employees as every man for himself. Most are trying to look good for their boss so they can be noticed. Several other reviewers cited employees who throw each oth er under the bus. As one employee at Cox Medical Center Branson wrote, Its dog eat dog.Unfortunately, of any coworker type, competitors are the most unavoidable and toxic. Competition often stems from systemic company practices, like forcing employees to compete for sales commissions that pit workers against each other, as one Sun Run employee put it. Beware of competitive coworkers, wrote one at Liberty Tax Service There is an hourly rate and commission rate, sometimes it got tough to get any clients if you are new. Intel is another example of company-induced coworker competition, at least according to one employee. Intel uses a performance review process called Theory X, where all employees are assumed to be lazy until proven otherwise. This forces people to always look at what your teammates are doing and try to do it better. Therefore, your teammates are your rivals It is kill or be killed. These kinds of cultures are unlikely to change, and if you cant handle the competition y ou might need to find another job.Just a few competitive coworkers, however, are manageable. First, dont play their game. Dont try to beat them or teach them a lesson or bring their egos down a notch. Focus on your game, which has nothing to do with your coworkers Your game is the good work you do, plain and simple. If their competitiveness doesnt chill out once you stop competing, talk to them one-on-one. Sometimes people dont realize theyre acting competitively, and just mentioning it might solve the problem. Say that you know they dont mean to come across this way, but some things they do - list specific examples - seem competitive. Tell them that you want to feel like youre working with each other, not against each other. At the very least, this conversation will embarrass them enough to scale back their outward demeanor.Competitors, delegators, and too-much-team players dont have to ruin your workday. If youre strategic about how you handle these relationships, youll be less stressed, more productive and free from someone else controlling how you feel and work. This article originally appeared on Kununu.

dont start your cover letter with my name is and other rules
dont start your cover letter with my name is and other rules dont start your cover letter with my name is and other rules Some random thoughts from hiring work recently, in no particular order* Do not start your cover letter with My name is unless you are under the age of 10. This does not make you sound like a grown-up.* When a job posting asks for something like 2-3 years experience and you have 10+ years of experience, you need to address that in your cover letter. That employer is telling you clearly that theyre envisioning someone more junior in their career than you are, and your chances of being considered will go up dramatically if you explain why youre interested anyway and why youd excel in the job. You might think that this is obvious (and that clearly more knowledge and more experience will help you do a better job), but if you dont explicitly address it, they will assume that you didnt read the job posting clearly, that youll be bored in the role, or that youre going to try to turn the role into something other than what they need, and they will pass you up.* Stop writing Salary is negotiable when the recipient of your letter never even asked you about salary.* Do notsend a resume with no dates of employment on it. Ive seen a handful of candidates doing this recently, and someone out there must be telling them that this is a good thing to do (probably to avoid age discrimination, is my guess). This makes it look like youre trying to hide something, and its incredibly unhelpful I want to know how recent your experience was and how long you did it for. Holding a job for 10 months nine years ago is very different from having done it for five years very recently. (And if it isbeing done to avoid revealing your age, you have now done the opposite, byhighlighting weirdness about your age.)* Speaking of dates, if there are jobs from the 1970s on your resume, its time to take them off. Unless thats the decade you spent as a cabinet official or something, its really not relevant to your candidacy at this point.

Why Youre Afraid to Ask for the Sale
Why Youre Afraid to Ask for the SaleWhy Youre Afraid to Ask for the SaleProspects almost never come out and say, OK, I want to buy this product right now. No matter how interested they are, they will be inclined to let you just walk out the door unless you specifically ask for the sale. But asking someone to buy from you in so many words can be a scary experience, especially for someone who is relatively new to ausverkauf. The trick to overcoming this fear is pinning it down and understand it. Fear of Poor Perception One common cause of closing fear is a perception issue. Salespeople are afraid of being seen as pushy, greedy, or otherwise unlikeable. Many salespeople dont like being closed themselves and fear that their prospects will have a similar attitude. Yes, you will run into the occasional prospect (usually someone who has been in sales himself or knows the standard sales approaches) who will pull back if you ask for the sale. But these prospects are extremely rare, and if theyre familiar with the sales process, they will know perfectly well that youre just doing your job. Its really notlage necessary to be pushy or aggressive to close someone. If youve done a good job in the rest of the presentation, the close will follow naturally and will seem like the next logical step. Ideally, by the time your presentation is done, youll have piqued the prospects interest and responded to any objections she has. If the prospect is already convinced, asking for the sale can be as simple as saying, Great, lets start filling out the paperwork. Fear of Making a Mistake Another very common fear, especially among new salespeople, is fear of making a mistake. Closing feels very awkward at first, and new salespeople often arent sure exactly how or when to start closing. So they tend to hesitate and hesitate until they think its too late altogether and just give up on it altogether. The best way to feel more comfortable with closing technique is by practicing it. Yo u may blow a few sales along the way, but if you dont make an effort to ask for the sale, youll almost certainly lose that prospect anyway. By making an attempt, youll move yourself a step closer to becoming a natural closer. And even if your practice close is awkward, theres a good chance youll get that sale anyway Odds are, you sound a lot better to the prospect then you do to yourself. Fear of Rejection Finally, salespeople dont ask for the sale because theyre afraid of getting a no back. Fear of rejection is a major stumbling block for any salesperson, and its something that youll have to overcome if you want to succeed in sales. Getting turned down is an inevitable part of sales. The important thing to remember is that when a prospect declines to buy from you, its not a personal rejection. Prospects decide not to buy for a wide variety of reasons, many of which have nothing to do with you. The best way to get over the fear of rejection is to grit your teeth and face it. Lik e all fears, once youve confronted it a few times, it will start to lose its power over you. After a while, the nos that you hear will seem less important especially once you start getting yes instead and realize how good it feels When youre getting ready to ask for the sale and start to feel that creeping dread, remind yourself that this feeling is strictly temporary and the more you close, the faster it will fade.

Bye, Bernie
Bye, Bernie Bye, Bernie About 5 minutes ago, the sentencing hearing for Bernie Madoff was slated to begin. One of the two sentencing requests that have been submitted to Judge Denny Chin is certain to prove to be wildly at odds with the actual term meted out. The defense requested 12 years, the government has asked for the statutory max of 150. The WSJ Law Blog has a handy summary of all the issues connected with the sentencing. Judge Chin has an interesting hobbyone that may even inform his decision-making process when, as this morning, he is faced with an historic judicial question. Judge Chin is a member of the Inn of Court, a group of lawyers and judges who reenact historic trials. Judge Chin even distilled the original transcripts of the trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg into a one-hour play. How to Create an Outstanding Grant Application
How to Create an Outstanding Grant Application How to Create an Outstanding Grant Application How to Create an Outstanding Grant Application Are you considering applying for a grant to support a project that isn't in your or your employer's budget? Engineers often seek funds to pursue a new program, technique or deviceand results of successful projects surround us every day. The biggest factor in a funder's decision is the value and importance of the work being proposed. But another crucial element is far more subtle: the way the proposal presents all the details to the funding source. Grant-writing is a very specific type of communication. Here are some guidelines to help you prepare a strong grant submission. Use simple, clear language. Most decision-makers are reading a lot of grant applications. Yours will stand out if it's easy to understand. You will probably include some technical terms, but all the wording around them should be in plain language. Try to minimize your use of engineering jargon. Keep a strong, sharp focus on your project's goals. Practice describing it out loud until you can explain it briefly, but vividly, to a non-engineer. Once you reach that level of clarity, your proposal already has an advantage. Remember who your readers will be. Grantmakers are not familiar with your idea until you explain it to them in your proposal. Make it easy to follow not only the work you'll be doing, but why they should award you the funds. Describe the potential benefits of your project so that funders see its value, whether that's within the science area, or for consumers, or both. Be unique. Talk about how your project is different from others, and how your distinctive experience and qualifications make you and your team the most appropriate engineers to fulfill the goals of the project you propose. Give Yourself Lead Time Writing is the final step of a long process for developing a winning grant proposal. Before you start writing, do your homework. Thorough, thoughtful preparation will increase your chances for securing the funding. Give yourself plenty of lead time, urges Beth Schachter, PhD, who trains scientists in proposal-writing. Many people assume they can write a proposal in a few weeks. If you want to write a successful one, though, Start thinking about your proposal nine to twelve months before the deadline, says Schachter, president of Beth Schachter Consulting in New York City. Make sure that your proposal matches the goals of the specific grantmaker. If your project doesn't further the mission of that funding agency, the organization has no reason to give you money, says Schachter. To learn about what this funder has supported, study the mission statement on their website. Get Early Feedback Study the criteria the funding agency uses to assess a proposal, Schachter advises. Then, shape your proposal so readers can see that you've addressed their criteria. NSF reviewers look for two general criteria: scientific merit and broader impact. Try to talk to one or more previous grant-winners about how they addressed the review criteria of the organization that funded their work. Once you've gathered all the basic information about the funding source, make a detailed outline of the facts you want to include, before you start writing. That will help you organize the material so you can choose the most effective information to include, or omit. Many funders have a specific format that grant applicants need to follow, so be sure to check for any guidelines on their website. Don't let the reviewers be the first people to read your proposal, Schachter stresses. Allow time for feedback from colleagues and mentors, and additional time for you to follow their suggestions to strengthen your proposal. Ideally, ask someone who's had success with this funding source to review your proposal. Approach at least one professional who's in a somewhat different field, because all the decision-makers may not be mechanical engineers. If you plan your strategy as carefully as you plan your project, your proposal has the greatest possible chance for success. Good luck! Carol Milano is an independent writer. .disc{margin-bottom:30px;} .disc li{padding-bottom:10px;}Make sure that your proposal matches the goals of the specific grantmaker.

Selling Your Salary in a Penny-Pinching Economy
Selling Your Salary in a Penny-Pinching Economy Selling Your Salary in a Penny-Pinching Economy Itâs a buyerâs market out there. How can top-priced talent make its pitch? Is being cheaper really being smarter?Whether we are downsized or right-sized, unemployment in 2009 is not associated only with mid-level and lower-level jobs. Itâs an egalitarian phenomenon. We all know someone who has been laid off, from the corner office to the cubicle. Maybe as you read this, youâre thinking about yourself or a loved one. Even my friends who hold American Expressâ coveted Centurion Black Card should listen up: Membership may have its privileges, but apparently helping you keep your corner office isnât among them.Executive-level jobs are twice as hard to find, often due to the age of the six-figure employee (those years of experience that justify a higher salary). Ironically, these are the very salaries that have either gotten them fired, landed them on thin ice or are preventing them from landing that new job.Think of it this way: Are you willing to buy a Rolex watch, a brand-ne w BMW or any expensive item right now, even if you can afford it? Not likely. You know the Rolex is better quality, just like you probably are as a high-priced executive. But guess what? The company youâre interviewing with or working for isnât buying you for the same reason youâre not buying that BMW: Weâre all price conscious right now.Come on, be honest:. Did you just cut back your cleaning personâs schedule to only once per week? Well, the boardroomâs no different; everyoneâs cutting back.Back to the Centurion Black Card: Remember in the beginning, there was the American Express green card. Remember that? Then it became a status symbol to have the gold. Once that wore off, platinum was the most elite. Then, one day, I heard rumors of a new card American Express was developing: the Centurion card, a k a the âblack card.âSuddenly, having a black card was the new status symbol. Like having a ⦠Hmmm ⦠iPhone today. (No, better! Like having a job today.)Then las t fall, the recession hit. Suddenly, many black-card holders may not want to spend as much. In fact, American Express just announced that even they were laying off workers. (Were they the black-card department, I wondered?)How to sell your product when itâs expensive and no one is buyingWhen that dreaded âR wordâ is used, I believe it is a blank check for bosses to fire anyone. You heard it here first: Bosses use a recession as an excuse to get rid of the highly paid black-carders who would ordinarily be hard to fire. In other words, a recession climate is used as an excuse to clean house. In my book âBulletproof Your Job,â (HarperCollins) I share 50 trade secrets on how anybody can seduce their boss into helping them save their job. Yes, I said seduce. Like the idea of how the black card âseducedâ you in to wanting one, even though it was expensive.Keeping a job today is hard enough â" finding a new one is even more difficult. So here are some of my most cutthroat â" but honest â" tips on getting back to work fast. More are in the book.1. âLowballâ yourself to get back to work. Take the lower salary â" donât scare away a company with your past âRolexâ wages. Get your foot in the door, and when this economy turns around next year you will be in the driverâs seat to renegotiate or find a new job entirely. 2. Loose lips sink ships. Everyone is looking for a job today, so their ears are everywhere. Every networking group you go to, everyone you talk to â" even the priest in your confessional â" may be applying for the same jobs. Youâd be shocked at who else has their eyes on your perfect job. Have you ever seen that show in which the actors steal auditions from one another? Itâs no different in the executive suite, my friend. Keep it quiet. 3. Never act desperate. Always look like you deserve a six-figure job. If youâve been making six figures, youâd better have a resume template that screams, âHire me!â Then, donât mess it up by dressing like youâre headed for an open casting call for the next âReal Housewivesâ (or âHusbandsâ) series. Youâre dressing for an interview, not for your 15 minutes of fame.So now think back to the American Express color codes. Do you think the status or color of our credit card much matters now? I donât. You represent the upper echelon of the job seekers; youâre the black card, but it can be tough to sell your expertise when someone else will do the job for less. Consider these three tips and write me with your thoughts.

Batteries for Managing the Grid
Batteries for Managing the Grid Batteries for Managing the Grid Until now, large costs and limited manufacturing capacity of batteries for large-scale electrical storage have kept utilities from committing to the technology. Now, a Texas electric distribution utility is stepping out with a plan to spend up to $5.2 billion on batteries to back up its transmission and distribution grid and reduce power fluctuation from renewable power sources. In a study it performed to justify the plan, Oncor Electric Delivery claims the move would lower consumer electric bills and preclude costly construction of new power plants. But there is a catch: In Texas, distribution utilities such as Oncor now are prohibited from owning power plants, and state lawmakers, who deregulated the industry 12 years ago, would have to amend a law defining batteries as a power producer. Oncor officials are pushing for legislation to be introduced for the change, but opposition is already brewing from power producers, including sister companies of Oncor. Confidence Still, the proposal shows a growing confidence in the viability of lithium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage. A study done by Navigant Research shows grid energy storage jumping to 20,800 MW by 2024, from 538.4 MW this year. Revenue is expected to grow to $15.6 billion annually, from $675 million, projects the report. Batteries would allow the utility to store and more effectively manage electric distribution from the grid. Image: Oncor.com For Texass state-wide grid, according to a study performed for Oncor by the Brattle Group, Cambridge, MA, 3,000 MW to 5,000 MW of grid-integrated storage would be the most cost-effective solution, based on installed cost of storage of $350 per kWh. Other analysts believe the price of batteries for storage will drop by half over the next seven to eight years, to $230 per kWh. The price reduction is expected to come from economies of scale, and a lot of that is tied to Tesla Motors rapid movement on building its $5-billion gigafactory in Nevada, which is projected to churn out batteries for 500,000 vehicles per year. Now scheduled to open in 2017, officials have said about 30% of production would be for utility-sized batteries. The plant in Reno, NV, also will produce batteries that can be used with rooftop solar systems to produce and then store power. SolarCity Corp., a sister company of Tesla (both are led by engineer and entrepreneur Elon Musk), is offering solar panels packaged with lithium-ion batteries for sale to California homeowners and companies. Oncor executives will not comment on their plans, but have said in published reports they expect battery prices to be competitive by 2018. A spokeswoman says Oncor does not have a detailed plan in place, but batteries would be installed across the entire state-wide grid, not only in its service area. The states grid has a capacity of about 81,000 MW. Scaling Up For the plan to work, the Brattle report claims the batteries must be installed across the entire grid. Considering both the impact on electricity bills and improved reliability of grid-integrated storage, customer benefits would significantly exceed costs, says Judy Chang, the lead author of the study. However, while beneficial from an integrated system-wide perspective, an efficient scale of storage deployment would not be reached if deployed by merchant developers who rely solely on participation in the wholesale market, or by retail customers who use it solely for backup power, or by wires companies who deploy it solely for capturing [transmission and distribution] benefits. These entities, independently and separately, will not be able to capture the full value of the storage to viably support the magnitude of investment. The U.S. Department of Energy lists Texas as having the most installed capacity from wind turbines, at 12,976 MW. Sparsely populated West Texas is a natural spot for wind machines. But wind, along with solar systems, produce power intermittently and feeding it into the grid efficiently presents operational problems. The state also is seeing increasing investment not only in utility-scale solar systems, but in smaller rooftop systems, often individual homeowners. Oncor officials believe batteries will provide an efficient way of managing distributed loads and storing energy until it is needed. Other states are pursuing batteries as well, and Navigant researchers believe the market is on the threshold of growth. The grid-scale energy storage market continues to develop in a piecemeal fashion, but there are signals it is poised for significant expansion in the coming years, writes Anissa Dehamma, a Navigant senior research associate. In particular, after several years of faltering growth, lithium-ion batteries are emerging as the breakout technology in this sector. As Oncor pursues its plan in Texas, state officials in California also are pushing utilities to embrace the technology. In 2013, state power officials formalized plans for California utilities to build 1,300 MW of storage capacity by 2020. Southern California Edison, one of the states three large investor-owned utilities, recently announced it had signed contracts for 250 MW of storage, including batteries. For Further Discussion After several years of faltering growth, lithium-ion batteries are emerging as the breakout technology.Navigant Research

Rethinking Blue Collar Work in America
Rethinking Blue Collar Work in America Rethinking Blue Collar Work in America It is a well known fact that not all college graduates are able to find work in the field they studied. Many industries within todayâs job market, such as finance and marketing, are overwhelmed with job seekers, with not enough positions to employ them all. Some college graduates end up taking trade jobs in other fields apart from that which they studied, but many take low-wage, part time jobs in order to earn an income while they continue to search for work in their field. In a 2014 report for the New York Federal Reserve Bank titled, âAre Recent College Graduates Finding Good Jobs?â authors Jaison R. Abel, Richard Deitz, and Yaqin Su explore the rate of âunderemploymentâ among college graduates. To examine this sample group of people, the authors write, âwe construct two groups of non-college jobs: what we refer to as good non-college jobs and low-wage jobs. Good non-college jobs consist of those occupations- for example, electrician, dental hygienist, or mechanic- that paid an average wage of around $45,000 per year in 2012. While these jobs do not require a bachelorâs degree, they tend to be career oriented, relatively skilled, and fairly well compensated. At the other end of the spectrum, low-wage jobs paid an average wage below $25,000 per year in 2012, and include occupations such as bartender, food server, and cashier.â Since 2000, the number of college graduates in the âgood non-college jobsâ category has fallen sharply, whil e the number of college graduates working in the low-wage part time jobs category has increased significantly. This is problematic because more than likely, these graduates are facing staggering student debt in the wake of their studies, and part time, non-career oriented, low-wage work will not be substantial enough to begin paying off those loans. Yet, a lack of these âgood non-college jobsâ examined in the study by the N.Y. Federal Reserve Bank is not the reason why college graduates take on low-wage jobs instead. In fact, there are vast numbers of these well-paid âblue collarâ jobs that are hiring, itâs just that the positions are going unfilled. The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines Blue Collar and Service Occupations as those jobs that include, âprecision production, craft, and repair occupations; machine operators and inspectors; transportation and moving occupations; handlers, equipment cleaners, helpers, and laborers; and service occupations.â In other words, blue collar workers can be considered as a class of laborers who earn wages and perform tasks usually associated with skilled trades and manual labor. While a certification or training course may be a necessity for many blue collar trades, an expensive 4-year liberal arts degree is not. Last month on Marketplace, Kai Ryssdal interviewed Prashant Gopal on high-paying blue collar job positions that are going unfilled. Amidst a discussion on six-figure construction jobs at the company 84 Lumber, Ryssdal and Gopal touched on an important aspect of shifting social attitudes regarding blue collar jobs. Gopal says, âEverybodys kind of pushing high school kids to go to college. I mean, the whole system used to be more of a track system until the early 80s where you could work in what was called shop. You should learn about how to fix a car, or to be a plumber, or all those sorts of things, and that vanished. I mean, you have classes here or there, but its not really a program. So people come out of high school, most try college, half of them drop out. And theyre left with nothing to show for it but debt.â Gopal articulates a valid reason as to why these âgood non-collegeâ or blue collar jobs are going unfilled. In general, the focus on early education in trade skills (high school courses like woodworking, home repairs/improvement, and shop) has tapered off. While many factors may attribute to the decline in shop classes and education in skilled trades, perhaps the one that is driving skilled labor education into extinction is that it is not a requirement to be admitted into college. For example, in âThe Death Of Shop Class And Americas Skilled Workforce,â writer Tara Brown examines the dwindling number of shop classes in California. She points out that, âShop classes are being eliminated from California schools due to the University of California/California State âa-gâ requirements.â These are essentially college prerequisites that high school students must complete before entering college, so that they can participate fully and have a shared curricular foundation wit h their classmates. While History/Social Science, English, Math, Laboratory Science, Foreign Language, and Visual and Performing Arts are among the California a-g requirements, Shop is not. Brown wrote, in 2012, that, âLos Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) with 660,000 students in K-12 has already eliminated 90% of shop classes.â While Browns focus was on one district in California, schools across the United States are also in the midst of eliminating their shop programs in order to place more emphasis on areas that are required for acceptance to college. This trend in college preparation is a response to a shift in higher educational values. American academic institutions change their core focuses to mirror the structure and demands of the government, in order to churn out college graduates who are ready for work in todayâs market. In an article for New Labor Forum, Sheila Slaughter and Gary Rhoades write that, âU.S. public higher education assigns markets central social value. Public colleges and universities emphasize that they support corporate competitiveness through their major role in the global, knowledge-based economy. They stress their role in training advanced students for professional positions close to the technoscience core of knowledge economies, in fostering research that creates high-tech products and processes for corporations, and in preparing undergraduate and community college students to be malleable workers who will fit into (and be retrained for) new information-based jobs and workplaces.â U.S. academic institutions are moving to formalize education in all areas that could be considered college majors. Students can get a degree in anything ranging from the traditional majors like Finance, Math, or Literature, but they can also pursue formal study of more abstract topics ranging from fine arts to human rights to âKeepinâ it Realâ or âHappiness Studies. Yet the government structure and university system are not entirely to blame for the avalanche of emphasis that is being placed on formal academic studies for college acceptance and the formalization of of areas that were not previously considered to be academic fields. Parents encourage their children to pursue college degrees and achieve higher levels of education, so that they can, theoretically, obtain higher-paying jobs. But the myth that a studentâs level of education is always correlated to their income is deceiving. There are simply not enough positions in the job market to catch up with the exponentially increasing numbers of highly educated college graduates that complete their studies each year. Even with an expensive liberal arts degree in English Literature or Communications, there are very few options for a solid career that a student can build upon after they graduate. The temporary jobs that are available, such as a job as an independent contractor at a literary age ncy or an internship at an art gallery or nonprofit, will not be enough to pay off student debt or begin saving money for later in life. While these students may have once been able to turn to a career path involving trade skills they were exposed to in high school, a student who was never exposed to a shop, home improvement, or woodworking program may just find themselves stuck. Both parents and early education institutions must rethink their hesitance to teach skilled trades to youth in America. The decline in the number of high school shop programs is troubling because it signals that there will be a lack of skilled workers to execute the jobs that make up the fabric of society. The number of unfilled jobs in skilled trades teaches us that we should never undervalue the importance of learning how things work and how to fix things from a young age. Blue collar jobs are essential to the nations industries, and there is a lot of money to be made in pursuing a career in one of the skilled trades. Itâs time to stop thinking of blue collar labor as âunderemploymentâ for college graduates, or as âlesserâ employment for non-college graduates.

The Most Important Skills for Networking
The Most Important Skills for Networking The Most Important Skills for Networking Never attend a social or business event with the idea that it is all about you because its not. Networking is about relationship building, not making sales pitches where you force others to listen to you drone on about yourself. The same is true for social and professional networking through the Internet. When building networks you must give something back. To sustain good personal and business relationships, both parties must benefit in some way. The Two Most Important Networking Skills Among all of the networking skills you can develop, the two most important, by far, are listening and asking questions. These two skills will impress new contacts and potential clients even more than your best business statistics. Good listening validates the value of others and shows respect. Talking too much is perceived as rude, dominating, and not reciprocal. Asking thoughtful questions shows sincerity and builds trust because it actively shows an interest in someone elses opinions and thoughts. Becoming a Good Listener One of the most unappreciated networking skills that you can easily master is the ability to listen. To get people excited about you and your business, it seems counter-intuitive, but you need to do more listening and less talking. Good listening is active, not passive. To be a good listener, take the following actions: Maintain eye contact.Do not fidget, shift your body weight often, and never look at your watch! All these things send a message that you are bored, impatient, or not interested.Nod your head to show agreement but do not interrupt to make your point or share your own experiences.Respond by repeating at least one key point the person you are talking with just made in the form of a question. For example, if Cindy Miller just told you how excited she is about a new product, ask her when it will be made available. Good questions follow good listening and accomplish two very important things: it shows you are listening and interested enough to ask a question and it keeps the conversation going in the direction you choose. Listening Skills Tip: A good listener actively pays attention to the conversation and responds appropriately with curiosity and questions. Selling Yourself Is Not All About You There is an effective interview tactic that also works very well in networking situations: To get someone excited about you, get them talking about themselves and their accomplishments first. When people feel good about themselves, they are more likely to feel good about you as well. It is important to show that you respect and value someone by listening and asking the right questions. When networking, pepper your conversations with tidbits about yourself and your business but always end your self-pitch with a question directed to the person you are talking to. They will get excited about their answers and associate that excitement with meeting you. Networking Success Tip: Basic human nature demonstrates that if someone is interested in you, they suddenly become more interesting themselves. To be interesting, you must first be interested! Networking With Sincerity Counts None of the previously mentioned tactics are suggesting that you should make up questions just to sell yourself. However, if you learn the art of listening and asking questions, youll find that you can easily build sincere, lasting relationships that are rewarding for both parties. Avoid treating clients, customers, and other business associates as âcash cowsâ and opportunities. Most people are good at recognizing those who are trying to suck-up to them and are offended by insincere interest, compliments, and gestures. How to Ask the Right Questions Asking questions is an art. Ask the wrong questions, and you can easily offend someone. But the reverse is also true; asking the right questions can build trust by opening lines of safe communication. Keep questions positive and focused. For example, if Yolanda Winston tells you how hard it was to downsize and lay off employees, a good reply would show empathy and pose a question to redirect her thoughts: A Good Response: âThat must have been hard for you given how much you care about your employees (empathetic listening). Do you think the economy will improve for business owners over the next quarter?â (Here, youre refocusing the conversationâs topic to the economy and away from the layoffs while indirectly letting Yolanda know that you attribute her downsizing to the economy and not her personal failure).A Poor Response: âDonât feel bad, a lot of businesses are laying off workers (when sharing personal struggles, few people like to be compared to others; it is dismissive). Youâll do better next year (disinterested; patronizing). Networking Success Tip: Ask a question that is on-topic whenever possible. If the topic is negative, avoid suddenly changing topics, as it will make the speaker uncomfortable. Instead, give an empathetic reply to show support and then ask a question to redirect to something that is still related, but allows the speaker to respond with something a little more positive.

Wondering if a company youâd like to work for offers this type of flex? Research the company to see if you can find clues as to its flexible work offerings. Look for it in⦠The companyâs culture Its human resource policies How it organizes its office space(s) The way the company talks about itself online The way employees talk about the company online The companyâs page in the Company Guide These are some of the current trends in the flexible and remote job marketplace. The Penny Hoarderâs Tiffany Connors says these trends really stand out: Career Fields: Healthcare, hospitality, and technology are three areas with lots of remote jobs, but flexible and at-home jobs exist in most career fields. also outlines the top career fields and companies for flexible jobs here. Soft Skills: Companies with flexible jobs are really looking for soft skills like empathy, patience, leadership, problem-solving, and time management. Paid Leave: More companies are offering paid family or parental leave for caregivers. Negotiating flexible work options with your employer? Before you even discuss flexible work options with your manager, you need to prepare and lay the groundwork for your discussion. Digital nomad and remote job success story Jason Byer, who found a remote job on , recommended the following steps: Research the workplace culture at your employer to see if flexibility is already in action. Be good at what you do. If youâre a mediocre employee, itâs going to be tough negotiating flexible work where youâll need to be trusted to work without supervision. You donât need to be the best, but you need to be good at what you do and show interest and excitement in your work. Have regular meetings with your manager. Itâs crucial this person sees the value you bring and for both of you to discuss areas to improve. Push for more frequent meetings, even short 15-minute meetings. Start being seen as a leader within the company so youâll be trusted with more responsibility outside the office. Change how you approach your plans to sound like someone taking the lead. Rather than asking for permission, state what you intend to do. Instead of, âCan I do this?â say, âI intend to do this. What are your thoughts?â Anticipate the concerns of your employer. They want you to get your job done, be effective, be creative, and do well for the goals of the company. Be ready to tell your manager if youâll be keeping the same schedule, be available to meet regularly, be able to keep up with your responsibilities or clients, etc. The panel offered these key tips for applying to flexible or remote jobs. Use search words like remote, telecommuting, and virtual. Do not search with the phrases work-from-home or work-at-home because theyâre too often used with scam jobs. Note any previous experience working flexibly on your resume. Whether casual or formal, if youâve been effective working flexibly, you should mention it. Apply to fewer jobs with better applications. Itâs better to apply to only the jobs you truly want and are truly qualified for than to apply to as many jobs as possible. Spend more time crafting excellent applications for fewer jobs. One-size-fits-all resumes wonât work anymore. Pay attention to the specific requirements in the job description and make sure any you fit are noted on your resume. Show that youâre trustworthy throughout the process. In job applications, emails, phone calls, and interviews, show the employer you can be counted on and trusted. Trust is a key component in flexible work. Always include a cover letter, even if it isnât required. Cover letters let you show your passion, interest, personality, trustworthiness, and more that a resume doesnât always convey by itself. And to wrap up, we discussed how to balance work and life when you work flexibly. Have online and offline times. Set work hours within your own house. You shouldnât work all day and night just because your work is always there. Flexible and remote workers tend to overwork, so pay attention to how youâre spending your time. Develop physical boundaries. Have a dedicated workspace or office to work from so that your brain understands when itâs work time and when itâs non-work time. We have a lot of creative office ideas here! Donât constantly be available for work. When youâre off the clock, turn off your work email on your smartphone so arenât constantly bugged by notifications. Let everyone else in your home know your work times. Kids, spouse, roommates- whoever you share a home with should know when youâre working so they can respect that boundary.
